Imagine This for Just a Minute
You’re sitting at your desk, preparing another email for your brand new product or service.
You’re just about to hit the send button when…the phone rings. You look at the receiver wondering if you should answer. It’s not often you get calls during the day.
You pick up the phone and there’s a woman in tears on the other end. You can hardly understand what she’s saying, although her name sounds familiar.
You’ve been so busy lately that you’re wracking your brain trying to figure out who she is.
Oh, right! She’s a brand new customer of yours and you can’t imagine why she’s in tears. You immediately think you’ve done something wrong or perhaps she wasn’t happy with a recent order.
You’re expecting her to ask for a refund. Maybe she has buyers remorse or got in over her head.
You’ve got your defenses on and just as you get ready to start to talk, she composes herself and says… “Thank You”.
Puzzled, you wonder, “Thank You? What could SHE be possibly thanking me for?”
In between the tears, she slowly starts to explain how much she appreciated your sending her daughter a get well card.
You didn’t think much of it. However, your curiosity was peaked by the signature line and web address in her email, so you visited her blog.
When you visited her blog, you discovered that her young daughter had suddenly become very ill and was in the hospital. You couldn’t help but read the story of how this young life, who used to play softball and soccer, who used to run around the neighborhood with all the other kids, was suddenly stricken with a debilitating illness.
“How sad for this family. That could be my own niece or daughter”, you thought.
Almost instinctively, you took a few minutes to send her a personalized get well card and then went back to your daily routine, not thinking much about it after that.
Little did you know, at the time, that the heartfelt card you sent was the unexpected “enveloped hug” that brightened this family’s day when they needed it most.
The only emails or promotions they have ever received from most companies is to spend more money.
Your customer is in tears because no business has ever been so thoughtful of their family needs before.
No company has ever taken the time to send heartfelt wishes or appreciation before.
Yours is no ordinary company, though. You understand that behind every email, every promotion and every website or phone call, is a real, live human being with genuine human needs… perhaps a family with a special needs child or a struggling single mom.
Your business works hard at reaching out to find new customers. You are in business to make money, after all. However, you also understand that in order to build long term relationships, you have go above and beyond just getting the sale.
You know about the power of genuine appreciation.
You get to inspire your visitors and customers in a way like they’ve never experienced before and showcase your business to the world.
You are truly soaring above your competition and making a difference in the lives of others that you never thought possible.
Wow.. Take just a minute right now to seriously think about that.
How does that make you feel?
Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
Do you think your customers and visitors will tell their family and friends about you and your company?
You can count on it.
