What type of business is it?

Ellie’s Vacation Rental is a vacation rental in Koloa, Hawaii. We have been providing affordable Kauai vacation rentals near Poipu Beach for the past 12 years.

Why did you start this business?

My husband and I and our 4 children moved from Palo Alto, Ca. to “unplug” from busy Silicon Valley. We were looking for a less competitive, less materialistic and slower pace environment to raise our children.

I grew up in San Mateo, Ca. but spent every Christmas on Oahu where my Mom was raised so the islands were a familiar place.

What keeps you moving forward?

I love watching my guests relax. We all need our down time and I find it so rewarding to support people with their R&R. I greet each of my guests and offer various tips on whale watching, points of interest, activities, etc. Kauai is a beautiful island.

What advice do you have for new entrepreneurs?

Have compassion for people; we all need it from others! This world has become so busy with people moving here and there and families are getting lost in the shuffle. I love treating my guests as part of my extended family. What goes around comes around; I get a lot of repeat customers and referrals because people feel the aloha spirit!

What else would you like to tell us about your story?

It’s so important to be consistent with your product. A couple of years ago my husband was in a bad motorcycle accident and we were air lifted to Oahu for 2 weeks. I was away from my routine and the fresh flowers and cookies on arrival that my guests were accustomed to disappeared…..they noticed. Guests appreciate the little “touches”
