Year Business Started: 2009
What type of business is Special Edibles? We specialize in Home baked goods.
Why did you start this business? I’ve actually been in the kitchen since I was a young girl. My mom started baking and decorating cakes when her third child came along (I’m the second child) As children we got to lick the beaters and bowl when mom was baking.
I remember my first wedding cake, I was maybe ten or eleven years old, it was made out of a cupcake. I decorated with frosting and even molded the sugar bell that I put on top. I think from there I was hooked.
Since then I’ve baked and decorated cakes on occasion for nearly thirty years. Nothing real fancy and I’m definitely not a professional as there’s still so much that I can learn about cake decorating.
I mostly use silk flowers, net and ribbons on my cakes as they make the cake look so perfect. I have though found some new techniques that I’m anxious to try!
Over the past year or so I’ve been doing my baking where I worked (a pizzaria). Unfortunately, the pizzaria was sold and with the new owners bringing in their own crew, places me in a predicament, I have no kitchen.
What keeps you moving forward? My passion for cooking for other people and I have jobs coming up and no where to bake.
What advice do you have for new entrepreneurs? To “Live your Dream” and never give up.
What else would you like to tell us about your story? So, my dream began when the opportunity presented us with a fifth wheel trailer. It’s an older one and our plan is to convert it into a moble food cart where I plan on expanding beyond my sweet baking and offering specialty breakfasts, sandwiches on home baked breads, homemade soups and fresh salads.
We have taken most of the insides out of the trailer but are now in a situation of needing additional funds to complete it. I found a program that may just be the answer to getting my little kitchen up and going.
You can visit my website, from there click on the picture of the trailer to view my project.
