How to Write a Great About Us Page That Isn’t Boring

It’s All About the Connection

In today’s world of social media, transparency and most importantly, authenticity, writing a great “About Us” page is a necessity.

We look at a lot of website and the first thing we search for is the about us page. If we like what we see, then we’ll look for social media icons or links so that we can connect.

If we don’t like what we see, we’re outta there.

If you’re just starting out on the web, great! You’ve got a clean slate. If you’ve been around the web for a while, and your “About Us” page has virtual cobwebs, seriously consider a redo.

Then, revisit your ‘About Us’ page once a year for tweaking.

We found some great tips on several websites and they all had the same essentials in common, the 5W’s.

Who Are You?

Tell a little bit about you you are, your experience, a few personal hobbies or interests. ‘Brag’ a little about yourself, but not too much. Accolades are reserved for media/press pages.

Make sure you have a crisp, up-to-date photo of yourself and photos of your team. Sorry, a college or high school graduation pic doesn’t cut it on a business website and neither do fuzzy mobile uploads.

What Do You Do?

The ‘what’ section is not about your services, but rather is a couple of short sentences about what your company is. For example, “Inspired WebWorks is a full-service web creative agency.”

Add who you serve… “we serve small businesses and start-up entrepreneurs.”

How do you serve your audience? “by taking care of their web presence so they don’t have to.”

Where Are You Located?

This one is easy. A word of caution, though. If you are home-based, do not put your home address on your website. It’s just a safety thing (and common sense).

For example, you could say, “We are an Illinois-based company” or “We are located in the Chicagoland area.”

When Did You Get Started?

People want to know how long you’ve been around. What is the history of your company? Don’t just list the date, though (boring).

Rather, say something like, “Our history dates back to (date) when our company founder, etc. etc. etc.”

It makes for a much more interesting read.

Why Do You Do What You Do?

People want to know what you believe. What is your mission? Your values? They need to know that you operate on the same principles that they do.

People don’t buy your products and services because they need them. They buy your products and services because they believe what you believe.

How Can People Contact and Connect With You?

Add your social media links for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and where ever else you want people to connect with you directly.

How else can someone contact you to find out how to work with you? Make sure you have a link to your Contact Us page on your website.
